Choosing the domain that is right for you
When you type in a web address, it does make a difference what the "dot" (.) is followed by. If you already know the difference in www.yourname.biz (a commercial site) and www.yourname.bz (an organization based in the Latin American country of Belize) and have established one or more domain names, skip ahead here.
If not, read on...
The most common top level domain is a "dot com" (.com). A dot com is used for commercial businesses. For example, www.yourname.com is usually a commercial site, though some organizations will use or "park" a dot com for other purposes. The site www.yourname.biz would also be a for a commercial site.
The ending "dot o-r-g" (.org), as you may have guessed, is used for organizations. Most nonprofits and community organizations use and benefit from this designation. If you see www.organizationname.org, it is probably a political, service, community, or other organization. However, individuals may also now register .org top level domains.
Since the site for Las Tejedoras networks with other computers and Web sites, we chose www.tejedoras.net. A dot net (.net) is often used as an alternative for a dot com (.com)
A new top level domain is .info. It is a general purpose domain that can be used for business, organization, or personal use.
Universities, colleges, and educational organizations usually rely on "dot e-d-u" (.edu) to distinguish themselves from commercial businesses, other organizations, or nonprofits.
"Dot gov" endings (.gov) are strictly reserved for United States government web sites, and are unavailable for use by any other entity. Not all government organizations use this. For example, the United States Postal Service is not www.usps.gov. It is www.usps.com and there is a long story about privatization . . .
Many U.S. federal, state, and local governments may also end in .us but are more recently moving to .com, .org or even .net designations. United States citizens and those doing business primarily in the United States may now register using the .us top level domain.
If you see the ending .mil, you are on a United States military forces web site.
Finally, check sites with other extensions or similar names to the one you want to see what kind of organizations you could be confused with in name-branding.
